Blue Giant product contributes to winning LEED design projects at ENR Best Projects 2011

On December 6th, 2011, Blue Giant, along with other contributing manufacturers and builders were celebrated at the 7th ENR Best Projects awards ceremony.
The Testa foods building , the first of its kind to be given a LEED Platinum accreditation, was built in Chicago, Illinois in 2011 and included several Blue Giant Vertical Storing Dock levelers in order to control internal climate, thus contributing to the building's overall energy savings and thermal comfort.
The Franklin County Courthouse also won at the ENR Best Projects 2011 awards ceremony on Tuesday and also included Blue Giant product, helping it achieve a Gold certified LEED rating.

Blue Giant joined the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in February of 2010. The USGBC is a non-profit organization that advocates environmentally friendly building construction and design. One of its initiatives is the LEED building rating system, which the organization website defines as “a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings.”

LEED recognizes performance in five key areas: sustainable site development, water efficiency, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. Certification is based on the total point score achieved across these five categories. Getting certified allows builders and developers to take advantage of a growing number of state and local government incentives, and can help boost press interest in their projects.

Blue Giant’s marketing manager, Michael Poeltl, who coordinated the company’s USGBC membership, confirms, “Blue Giant products give customers a rating advantage when up for LEED accreditation from multiple standpoints: use of regional materials, bio-based fuel and Recycled content in our construction materials, and optimized energy performance.”

Blue Giant practices what it preaches. The company recently replaced the roofing material at its Brampton manufacturing facility with a highly reflective TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) membrane. The TPO membrane contains no plasticizer or ingredient that can cause it to become brittle and shrink over time. It reflects U.V. rays, keeping the roof surface temperature comparatively cooler and reducing the energy impacts associated with heavy air conditioning use. Reduction in both heating and cooling use translates into a smaller carbon blueprint.

Blue Giant Equipment Corporation introduces its new U-Series line of dock levelers. The U-Series dock levelers combine strength and simplicity of operation with versatility, and are available in rated capacities of 30,000, 35,000, 40,000, and 45,000 lbs (13,636, 15,909, 18,144, and 20,454 kgs).

“The U-Series dock is our universal dock that is suitable for all applications,” confirms Jeff Miller, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Blue Giant. “In keeping with our role as a dock products solutions provider, this new product is available in all models, including hydraulic, mechanical, and vertical applications. The U-Series will also be used in all our future advanced dock leveling packages. The U-Series dock levelers will serve as a blueprint for future product development.”

The U-Series was constructed with worker safety in mind. The fixed rear hinge remains flush with the floor during use, eliminating pinch points and cross-traffic obstructions. The hydraulic and vertical models have velocity fuses that limit free fall of a loaded platform to within 3”(76mm), reducing the risk of employee injury and damage to both cargo and dock equipment. Dual fall-safe legs on the mechanical model restrict free fall.

The mechanical dock’s hold-down system features a friction disk brake and lifting strap rated at 6,500 lbs (2955 kgs). During loading and unloading, the disk brake enables the deck to seamlessly match the trailer height, minimizing cross-docking bounce. The increased contact surface with the disk brake creates even wear on the brake pads and results in greater hold while reducing maintenance requirements.

The hydraulic dock leveler comes standard with a single push button control station for sequenced deck and lip operation. The vertical storing units are operated by the Blue Genius™ Gold Series I Dock Control Panel, which is also an upgrade option for the hydraulic dock leveler.

The Blue Genius™ Touch Control Panels feature a multi-language LCD screen that provides clear, real-time instructions for safe dock equipment operation, maintenance, and diagnostics, as well as supervisory keypad override functions. This groundbreaking line of microprocessor-based controls has been drawing favorable comments from Blue Giant dealers since its April 2009 launch, primarily for its safe and efficient method of controlling multiple pieces of dock equipment in their proper sequence.

Our Dealer Development Manager for the Northeast and Mid to Southern U.S., partnered with Warehouse Technology Inc. (Pennsylvania) to secure the sale for the brand new Philadelphia Regional Produce Market.

The award of this job was significant on many levels. The Produce Market is a massive 667,000 square foot building (seven football fields long and 20 acres under a single roof), and workplace to 1,468 employees with another 375 new jobs expected to be created once the building is complete. Blue Giant Equipment Corporation announced a Licensing and Technology Agreement today with Kawahara Manufacturing Co. Ltd., Hiroshima-Ken, Japan, to build and market Blue Giant dock levelers for the Asian market.

Kawahara Manufacturing has licensed the rights to manufacture Blue Giant mechanical and hydraulic pit and edge-of-dock levelers at their Shanghai Kawahara Machine Co., Ltd., facility. The Blue Giant dock levelers will complement Kawahara’s existing line of scissor lift tables and custom application solutions. Shipments of the first Blue Giant dock leveler products are expected to begin in January, 2010.

A formal announcement will be made at the Blue Giant booth during the CeMAT Asia show in Shanghai, China, October 26–29, 2009. Steve Greco, Blue Giant Director, International Sales & Marketing, states that the new partnership “Brings together the synergies of two leading companies in the industry. Kawahara has the manufacturing resources and marketing organization to bring our industry-leading loading-dock technology to a growing Asian market. Brampton, ON, Canada (April 2009) – The new SVR303 StrongArm™ vehicle restraint system from Blue Giant Equipment Corporation delivers advanced functionality and security to loading dock operations. It features a low-profile rotating arm that engages the vehicle’s rear impact guard at a 90-degree angle to secure the trailer to the dock with 35,000 pounds of restraining force.
“Industry studies show that falls from high places such as docks is one of the top four warehouse accidents, along with forklifts overturning, failure to enforce the use of personal protective equipment, and injuries caused by unguarded machinery and equipment,” says Jeff Miller, Blue Giant VP of Sales & Marketing. “Our new StrongArm™ vehicle restraint system can go a long way toward preventing these accidents and complying with OSHA regulations requiring that trucks and trailers be secured to the loading dock.”
The ANSI MH30.3-approved StrongArm™ restraint can be mounted to either the dock face or driveway to accommodate various applications and driveway designs. The Blue Genius™ controllers provide accurate proximity sensing of the operator’s finger within the low-level electric field range. Since its multiplexed electric field senses touch and proximity through the insulating surface without direct electrical contact with electrode metal, problems of wear, contamination, and even corrosion are eliminated, and higher operational reliability is ensured. Eliminating all mechanical buttons also eliminates problematic contact wearing and breaking. An additional benefit is that the controller can go from standby to active mode as a finger approaches the panel thereby providing fast, safe, and accurately sequenced operation. The Blue Genius™ controllers feature a user-friendly, multi-language LCD screen that provides clear, real-time instructions for operations, maintenance, and diagnostics, as well as supervisory keypad lockout and override functions. The menu display is factory-programmed and accessible for three levels of users:
1. “Operator” for general operation and diagnostics,

With an offering of stock specific parts, the Columbus depot will include mechanical leveler parts product for cable style Pit Levelers, including Blue Giant's A & C Series Dock Levelers. In addition to these they will also stock parts for the Edge-of-Dock leveler, such as the MDC & the MDX Series.

Blue Giant celebrates their 45th Anniversary with a staff picnic.

Blue Giant celebrated it's 45th anniversary with staff and family over the past weekend, with a fun filled day at a local conservation area where they enjoyed events for the kids, activities for the adults, a full service BBQ, and a perfect day to boot.

Staff received commemorative t-shirts, hats and Frisbees, while three employees received their 20 years of service rings. The President of the Brampton Board of Trade presented a plaque to Blue Giant's President & CEO in recognition of their 45th anniversary, speaking briefly to the employees. Blue Giant's own president gave an encouraging speech to a captive audience and then proceeded to cut the cake.

Events ranged from a tug-of-war between departments (in which the service department won out), a potato sac race and watermelon eating contest. Prizes were handed out to all of the winners and in the case of the watermelon eating contest, there was a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize.

Honoring staff and their families is a wonderful way to show employees that they are valued and, as mentioned in Bill Kostenko's speech; families are an important support structure for Blue Giant employees, and should be credited as such. Blue Giant knows it's built its success' through hiring, and maintaining quality people, doing a quality job.

Blue Giant revitalizes its green space.

Blue Giant has invested once again in their environment, this time taking it outside, by landscaping their green space to create a park like setting for staff and visitors alike.

Blue Giant welcomes new Technical Development Manager Gerard Biasutto

Bringing a wealth of knowledge to our Engineering Department, Mr. Biasutto is a welcome addition to the staff at Blue Giant.

"Gerard Biasutto is the new Technical Development Manager at Blue Giant. He is a Professional Engineer, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Ryerson. He comes to us with over 12 years experience in the engineering field ranging from design, sales and management of Automotive Equipment OEM Design and Manufacture for various suppliers.
Gerard has previously worked for two small-mid-sized engineering firms whom have both dealt, directly & indirectly, with the “Big 3” Automotive companies. His history includes being Tier 1 and Tier 2 supplier of automotive & commercial automated, ergonomic, and material handling equipment. His roles have included brainstorm concept, design OEM product, manufacture, and turnkey install, fully tested automated and semi-automated systems at customer’s facility.
Gerard started out his engineering career as a main mechanical designer and worked with such programs as AutoCAD in a 3-D format in order to design complex automated equipment. He continued developing proficient designing and prototyping skills using 3-D AutoCAD, Mechanical Desktop, & Inventor and Design/Process FMEA Engineering Software & Design for Manufacturability DFM philosophy.
He later advanced to Project Engineer, which entailed duties such as Project management, and liaison between customer, sales, and project completion. As project engineer, he worked with Excel in order to implement a cost savings budget and profit analysis between engineering and purchasing departments. All aspects of design & review, including build, require careful execution following all Safety & Bureaucratic Codes, Standards & Regulations, as well as customer specifications for product uniformity.
Gerard further progressed to Engineering Manager, which included the responsibility of the entire engineering staff, R&D and Electrical Controls. He also managed the service technicians when working with the engineering staff. His liaison among the management staff also involved him with sales, customer relations, and vendors."

Biasutto's presence has already been felt at Blue Giant in the short time he has been with them. Blue Giant looks forward to a long and prosperous future with Mr. Biasutto at the helm of their Engineering Department.

Risks associated with Loading Docks.

There are many common risks when working at a loading dock, a couple of examples include:

Trailer creep/separation and premature departure from the loading dock;
Driving into overhead door panels and off the end of empty docks.

The second is hazard for both employees and machinery. This is very preventable. Blue Giant has introduced the XDS to the market - and in doing so reduced accidents exponentially. With a simple, and ingenious dock barrier built into the leveler, designed to stop a 10,000-pound forklift traveling at 4 mph from falling off an open dock or striking a closed door, the XDS Series is the new generation of dock leveler.

Trailer creep is also very preventable, by simply using a Vehicle restraint such as the TL-85 which holds onto the trailer of a truck, preventing it from a premature departure. A driver knows not to depart on the red light and only when the green light is showing to pull away. All the while the TL-85 is holding it in place at the dock, until the green light turns.

The Mantis Loading Dock Leveler

Blue Giant is renowned for their dock levelers world wide. The Mantis leveler is the newest in the Blue Giant line of levelers. It comes in both a hydraulic and mechanical design.

Hydraulic dock levelers are very efficient, and easy to use. The activation and positioning is achieved through constant-pressure on the push button controls.
A single push-button control operates the deck and the lip, and is located on one remote wall-mounted station. The leveler itself is powered by a self-contained, maintenance-free power pack. Deck support is provided by a minimum of 6 formed channels welded at impact points. A continuous, single-piece headboard increases its strength across the front of the deck. The platform is designed to “flex” up to 4 inches when under load to ensure full-width contact between the lip and trailer bed.
